“After winning an open competition, we contracted know.consulting to undertake a baseline assessment of the NDA’s Innovation Programme. The results of the study have enabled us to better quantify the benefits of our past project portfolio, and helped inform our innovation strategy and short term delivery priorities. The team from know.consulting were always professional and knowledgeable, they delivered on time and produced a comprehensive quality report which has been shared with senior stakeholders across the NDA Group.”

An Exploration of Changes to the Cost of Research in UK Research Performing Organisations

Client: UK Research and Innovation, 2022-23

The UKRI Research Sustainability team commissioned know.consulting to assess the feasibility of developing a robust methodology to explore trends in the underlying costs of research, how these costs are changing over time, and the drivers behind observed trends. We conducted detailed analysis of UKRI grants data and TRAC data, supplemented by targeted stakeholder interviews to gain additional qualitative insights, finding for example that the average research council or UKRI grant increased in size from £480,000 to £730,000 between 2010 and 2019, with real terms increases across all cost categories.. See UKRI blog for discussion of the project here.

Client: Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), 2021/22

The NDA Corporate Centre innovation programme covers a range of supply chain focused calls and competitions run since 2006. It is targeted at the NDA’s growing ambition to deliver its decommissioning mission safer, faster and at lower cost. In this project, know.consulting conducted extensive research fieldwork (interviews, survey, desk-based research) to draw conclusions on impact achieved to date, identifying a range of innovation outcomes, enhanced business outcomes, and broader impacts on the decommissioning sector and beyond.

STFC Skills Factory Business Case

Client: Science and Technology Facilities Council, 2021

know.consulting supported STFC (the Science and Technology Facilities Council, part of UK Research & Innovation) to develop the economic case for its proposed Skills Factory, which will provide early career and retraining opportunities to boost the UK’s technical skills base. As part of this, we developed a detailed logic model, conducted options analysis and a value for money appraisal, and provided expert advice on monitoring and evaluation to ensure that best practice was incorporated from the initial design stages.
