About the role

As providers of trusted expertise in the analysis of research and innovation, having the right in-house expertise is critical to our work. Our advice is built on excellence in primary and secondary research, statistical analysis, and economic modelling.

Typically, you will be working to support the delivery of analytical projects such as market studies, impact assessments, evaluations, and horizon scanning studies, engaging in both quantitative and qualitative work. Work topics are wide ranging, with recent projects including a benefits study for nuclear decommissioning innovation programmes, evaluations of large-scale multi-disciplinary national research and innovation programmes, and business case development for a new multi-hundred-million pound investment aimed at developing the UK research skills base.

As the UK research and innovation landscape is continuously evolving, we also often need to develop novel and innovative methodological solutions for our clients, which requires creative thinking as well as having a strong grasp of analytical fundamentals.

About you

You need to have (essential):

  • To be recruited as an economist, an undergraduate (2:1 minimum) or postgraduate degree in economics OR experience working as a professional economist;

  • To be recruited as an analyst, an undergraduate (2:1 minimum) or postgraduate degree in a social science or other subject in which you can clearly demonstrate social research skills;

  • An analytical mindset and good quantitative skills (e.g. data management, analysis, and modelling);

  • Good qualitative skills, including the ability to synthesise and gain insight from ‘softer’ analytical data and evidence;

  • Good people skills, and ability to contribute to (and occasionally lead) interviews as part of primary research;

  • The creative, solution-orientated ability to work with imperfect and incomplete evidence;

  • An interest in research and innovation;

  • A strong work ethic, motivation, and organisational skills;

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English;

  • A high proficiency with Microsoft programmes, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint;

  • The right to live and work in the UK.

You may also have (desirable):

  • Experience of working as a professional economist/analyst in industry or government;

  • Familiarity with principles in the HM Treasury ‘Green Book’ and ‘Magenta Book’;

  • A good understanding of the UK research landscape, with relevant experience;

  • Demonstrated interest in wider science and innovation matters;

  • Proficiency with programming languages, such as R and Python;

  • Fluency in European or other languages.
